JeffT - saw that at a science fiction convention many many years ago. Sci fi nerds make quite a few good little movies. Not saying a sci fi person made that but at conventions, they do show a mix of topics.

Favourite Quirky / Low Budget / Non-Mainstream Movies
by Simon inso the recent topic about film franchises got me thinking.
sure, we all love the big budget, mainstream releases that are so successful they spawn never-ending (it sometimes seems) sequels.
we could watch marvel and star-wars movies for the rest of our lives (and we might just ...).. but y'know what i love?

The Abyss is one of my favorites. Always remember it because of the acting and the deep dark tank they shot in. But my fondest memories of it are - the rat got saved! Nothing like pet rat love.
Saw 2012. Sacrificial love at it's best.
Lathe of heaven. Confusing film for me.
Duel. Tense and relentless.
This isn't a time movie but it's cute and funny. First done as a play, The History of Future Folk. The two comedians that wrote and starred in it are hilarious.
Not many time movies can hold up to scrutiny but as long as the acting is good and the plot isn't bad, I'm ok with it.
Found this while looking for something else.

Film Franchises
by LoveUniHateExams inso, i'm quite into films, and horror is my favourite genre.. i don't own many franchises in full or almost in full.. but when i first started collecting dvds, i did tend to buy every film in a particular franchise if i enjoyed the first film or two.. i bought alien (1979) and aliens (1986) second-hand for 99 pence each (less than a dollar each!
) and they're fantastic.. so, i went back to the second-hand shop and bought alien 3 (1992), alien resurrection (1997) and prometheus (2012) ... erm, yes.
alien 3 (theatrical cut) was pretty good; resurrection was so bad it's funny and despite the gorgeous shots and good acting by michael fassbender, prometheus wasn't my thing.

I loved the first Star Wars (I'm not going to figure out Lucas's backtrack numbering) Liked the second one better. Hated the 3rd one. Nothing like making fun of your own series right? Chewbacca doing the Tarzan yell? Stormtroopers that couldn't hit the ground with their guns if they wanted to. End of that for me. Lost interest in it almost completely and haven't seen anything but snippets since.
Aliens. Watched it and loved it. Watched most of the series but not all. Got a little goofy with the one that had a half human/alien that chomped off a guys head. My favorite thing in the movie was the human forklift. Wish I had that.
Prometheus was just bad. Boring. The only interesting actors was Cherise (?) and the blond robot guy. Yes run in a straight line, exactly in the same path as a giant ship is crashing. Doesn't it make sense to run at a right angle? No? Well then, that is prometheus.
Bladerunner. Great first film. Was bored by the second. Wasted the opportunity to be interesting.
I don't love a series just because it is one. Individual movies have to stand on their own.

They are increasingly appealing to emotion
by cookiemaster inthey always have but lately, they've taken it to a whole new level.
the new convention video about the end, the many videos at conventions and meetings, the new songs, all highly emotionally manipulative.
and they're working.

I remember when assemblies had subjects about the trinity, what prophesies meant then and now, Christendom and how it will fall, wrong teachings of the world etc. Plenty of scriptures to be read along with new publications full of the same mind twisting explanations. Most of the emotional manipulations came at the end on Sunday. A drama and the end talk.
Now it's like a drama all the time.
I wonder tho, what affect it's having on JW's. About 3 or 4 years ago, the JW's at work, came back off their 3 day assembly and I heard them excitedly whispering about "how close it was" Now, I don't even know if they went to one. They certainly don't seem enthusiastic. I just hear how bad the world is all the time.

Thank you for sharing your story. You never know how similar our fears are, growing up in this religion, unless someone expresses them.

Suicide note from pedophile elder's victim..
by QuestioningEverything inyears ago at the kh my aunt attended, there was an elder from a prominent jw family who was accused of sexual conduct with several young men in the hall.
he was an unmarried guy in his 30's who wore a terrible hair piece/toupee.
his sister once told me he was waiting for the new system to marry so he could have a perfect wife--isn't that funny?.

Sad.
But at the same time confusing. Of the people that saw the letter, why didn't they report it to the police? Maybe the elders wife was in her own way trying to get people to notice the injustice. But since I don't know what she told others when she was showing this letter around, your perspective may be right.
The other thing is, why did the elder have it and not the family?

I just watched the final video from this years convention. OMG!!!
by NikL ini am shaking all over right now.
i think it's worse that the bunker video.. i used to think there was no way that these people would actually "drink the cool aid" if you get my drift, but seeing this video i am now not sure it could never happen.. having a wife who i love dearly trapped in this cult is really freaking me out right now...

Maybe the elders are projecting their own personal Armageddon. They may have fears of child sexual abuse victims coming after them for hiding pedophiles.

Struggling to Live a Lie
by Addison0998 init’s been very difficult, much more than i first anticipated to live a lie, (be pimo and a regular active member) i still live with my parents but i plan on moving out at the end of the year, so i really need to keep it together.
but i think people are starting to get suspicious that something is up.
i’ve stopped commenting, going on service all the time, talking at the door, and occasionally voicing something, such as a question that no one has a good answer for, that makes people think, but ahah, thinking is dangerous and wrong so that is suspicious of course.

Try to find a way to give yourself a break during the meetings. Listening will drive you crazy. Sometimes it will make you mad or want to roll your eyes.
So if you can, write down things you want to do later or write a story - anything that will take your mind off of the lies from the podium. Read something else on your tablet if you have one.
If people want to question you about the meeting - hey wasn't that part on giving the WT your inheritance great?- just nod and ask the same question back at them. Nobody really gets too deep after the meetings anyway. Then just excuse yourself because you've made "plans". Let them think it's service orientated.

Scary Effectiveness of Assembly Videos
by Captain Schmideo2 inwell, i got to see the final day of this years regional convention.and i saw something that disturbs me.. the final, "summing up review" video.
it disturbs me because it was so well done.
(i wish i could remember the title of the song), to the strains of a solo vocalist singing in a fine "irish tenor", we see the actors from the previous videos of the last few days all assembling together in a clearing.

You know who else will be affected? All the studies that have been told about a nice paradise earth, so they've been coming to the meetings on Sunday.
Here is their first assembly and on Sunday, they see the writing on the video. Either you are with us or against us. It may scare some because they aren't on the golden ark yet and cause them to panic. Some might be uncomfortable seeing all the JW's beaming with joy over the death of the millions of people represented by the soldiers. Others will sneak off to the bathrooms and make a hasty exit out the doors, never to welcome another witness at their door.
I saw something similar happen about 8 or 9 years ago at the KH. One study was so scared after the sunday meeting because the special talk by the CO was about how close the big A was and everyone not baptized wouldn't make it. The over eager brothers in the hall were saying Come Lord Jesus Come! The poor guy was crying in fear. I never saw him again.
Hope most of the invited studies wise up.

Sometimes it's the little things....
by dubstepped ini'm listening to a podcast where a former elder describes how another elder conducted the watchtower study about hyperbole.
the elder called it hyper-bowl.
soon the whole congregation called it hyper-bowl.

I'm afraid my english has been skewed since 1st grade. I thought the teacher was reading a different story one time, because I could not find the word kernel in the story. After much deliberation, I figured out the word was colonel. So I pronounced as I saw it. Col -o-nel. Where she got the "r" in it - I didn't find out till years later that it was "that" English.
Words are very strange - everyone is pronouncing thermometer wrong. It's really a thermo meter. See, now it makes sense. My sister is the whiz at knowing every rule of saying a word, but I missed that along with the lecture on how to read a clock and the knowing the months of the year.
You say bayou, I say biyou, but the next time I might say it your way.
